What I Learned this Month in the Therapy Space (May 2025)

May is Mental Health Awareness month. Over the past few years, and especially since the early days of the pandemic, it has become apparent to most how important mental health is to all of us.

CAMH’s slogan, Mental Health is Health, really captures that notion for me. I was fortune enough to enjoy a week-long vacation with my family last week. And, while I enjoy my time with my clients, I felt really grateful for the time away. I think I can be a better therapist when I have some time to reset.

This month there are a few things that popped up for me, that I wanted to share, all in the mental health space.

After spending five years in school, reading so many important texts (some were super engaging, some… not so much), I had a pile of psychology-related books that I had set aside. I took a break from reading for a few months, however, I slowly started reading Secure Relating, Holding Your Own in an Insecure World, by Sue Marriott and Ann Kelley. Marriott and Kelley host a fabulous podcast for therapists (Therapist Uncensored), and while their book is not geared to therapists per se, it was a refreshing read on attachment theory, providing a helpful and concise way of looking at how we relate to one another. I highly recommend this book for anyone interested in learning more about themselves and attachment theory.

CAMH’s sunrise challenge is back. And my dear friend, Karen Cleveland, is raising funds for Canada’s pre-eminent mental health research institution. Click here  to donate to Karen’s team or make a donation in general.

And lastly, an update on my lymphatic drainage massages, through Toronto Community Massage and Wellness. I was able to stack three treatments over three weeks thanks to my partner’s benefits, and I have noticed a notable difference in my vertigo symptoms. I still have moments of dizziness, and my tinnitus is also still there, however, my head feels less heavy, I feel more connected to my body, and my vision feels clearer. I am going to take a pause and revisit in a week or two. My massage therapist also recommended seeing an osteopath on their team to see about taming my tinnitus symptoms. I’ll report back.
